Die ultimative Hommage an Paul Robeson
Paul Robeson – afroamerikanischer Bassbariton, Bühnen- und Filmschauspieler, All-American-Football-Spieler, Anwalt und Verfechter der Bürgerrechte – war ein ausgesprochener Gegner von Rassismus, Kolonialismus und sozialer Ungerechtigkeit. Als Rutgers-Absolvent, Gelehrter der Weltkulturen und Sprecher von mehr als 20 Sprachen setzte er sich unermüdlich dafür ein, politische und rassische Barrieren zu überwinden und Brücken zwischen den Völkern dieser Welt zu bauen. Mit dem Beginn des Kalten Krieges und der Roten Angst nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg änderte sich jedoch das politische Klima. Die Türen für Robeson begannen sich zu schließen, Konzertsäle und Radiosender schlossen ihn aus. Im Juli 1950 entzog das US-Außenministerium dem auf der schwarzen Liste stehenden Künstler den Reisepass und hinderte ihn so daran, seine erfolgreiche internationale Karriere als Sänger und Schauspieler fortzusetzen. Doch das internationale Publikum honorierte und verlangte weiterhin nach ihm, und er fand technologisch fortschrittliche und effektive Wege, um seine Zuhörer in aller Welt zu erreichen.
Heute leben seine bemerkenswerte Stimme und seine unvergleichliche Bühnenpräsenz in Tonaufnahmen und Filmen weiter. Diese 14-CD-Edition ist die allererste Veröffentlichung seiner kompletten Columbia-, Victor- und HMV-Aufnahmen von 1925 bis 1947. Alle seine amerikanischen Aufnahmen wurden von den originalen Masterplatten und -bändern sorgfältig restauriert, und 25 Studioaufnahmen – sowie seine kompletten historischen New Yorker und Londoner Konzerte von 1958 – werden hier zum ersten Mal auf CD präsentiert. Das 160-seitige, reich illustrierte Buch mit Essays von Shana L. Redmond und Susan Robeson würdigt eine kulturelle Ikone des 20. Jahrhunderts.
